Dr. Ruth M. Shaffer, Ph.D.

Dr. Ruth Shaffer was raised in a small town in central Pennsylvania. Dr. Shaffer has been a licensed Psychologist for over 25 years, having received her Ph.D. from Derner Institute at Adelphi University. After over 20 years as the C.E.O. of New Era Veterans, a not-for-profit agency that provided housing to formerly homeless veterans, she received her M. Div. from Union Theological Seminary.

“Dr. Ruth” is an active member and former chair of the Executive Council of her home church, Safe Haven UCC in Ridgewood, Queens and served as Treasurer for the Metropolitan Association of the New York Conference of the United Church of Christ.

She is currently on its Committee on Ministry, Finance, Personnel and Executive Committees.  She also serves on New York Conference’s Commission on Ministry and as a Boundary Awareness Trainer.

Dr. Shaffer came to Safe Haven from the Riverside Church, where she was a lay leader, serving as Chair of the Nominating Committee, Mission and Social Justice Commission and Conflict Resolution Design Team.  She served on church council and was a member of The Senior Minister and Social Justice Minister Search Teams.  Dr. Shaffer was also a Tsunami Relief delegate to Sri Lanka.

Dr. Shaffer is the proud mother of a son, Jonathan, and maintains a private practice in Psychology in Queens.

In November 2020 Dr. Ruth became an ordained minister in the Metropolitan Association of the New York Conference UCC.
